Class Picker Guide

A class picker helps teachers call on students fairly without repeating the same volunteers. Paste a class list, pick a name, and optionally remove picked names from the pool.

Class Picker - Tips & Best Practices

  • Use one name per line for clean selection.
  • Turn on remove picked names for no repeats.
  • Pair with a classroom timer for timed questions.

How to Run a Fair Class Pick

Paste your full class list with one name per line, then choose whether picked names should stay in the pool or be removed after each selection. Keeping names in the pool means everyone always has a chance, which works well for spontaneous participation. Removing them ensures everyone gets a turn over a full class period. Display the result on your projector or interactive whiteboard so students can see the pick is random and fair.

Classroom Use Cases for the Name Picker

  • Cold-calling: pick a student to answer without the same volunteers dominating.
  • Presentation order: randomize who presents first to avoid front-loading anxiety.
  • Task assignments: assign classroom jobs or roles without teacher favoritism.
  • Game teams: split a smaller group quickly when the group generator is more than needed.

When to Use Group Tools Instead

The class picker returns one name at a time. If you need to split the whole class into groups or pairs simultaneously, use the team generator or pair generator from the group generators hub. Those tools take the full list and divide it in one step rather than picking one at a time.
