Getting Started
How to Use the Stopwatch
Navigate to the Stopwatch page. The large display shows hours, minutes, seconds, and hundredths. Press the green Start button (or press Space) to begin timing. Press Pause (or Space again) to pause. Press Reset (or R) to return to zero. To record a lap time, press Lap (or L) while the stopwatch is running - the current elapsed time is captured in the lap list below without stopping the main timer. Lap times remain visible until you reset. For athletes who need to track splits, the lap stopwatch displays a dedicated split history below the main timer.
How to Use the Countdown Timer
Navigate to the Countdown Timer page. Enter your desired duration using the number pad, quick-preset buttons (1 min, 5 min, 10 min, etc.), or by typing directly into the time fields. Press Start to begin the countdown. The display turns amber when 1 minute remains and red when 30 seconds remain. When the timer reaches zero, an audio alarm sounds and the display flashes. Press Reset to restore the original duration and start again, or Restart to immediately restart from the configured time. For exam and classroom environments, the exam timer offers a fullscreen high-contrast mode with configurable warning thresholds.
Fullscreen Mode Instructions
Any timer on Stopwatch.now can be expanded to fullscreen for projector display, smart board use, or large-screen visibility. Click the Fullscreen button on any timer page (usually in the bottom-right corner of the timer display). Alternatively, press F while the timer page is focused, or use your browser's built-in fullscreen shortcut (F11 on Windows/Linux, Control + Command + F on Mac). The timer will fill your entire screen. Press Esc to exit fullscreen - this does not stop the timer, which continues running in the background.
Keyboard Shortcuts Reference
All major timer functions can be controlled via keyboard without touching the mouse. The page must be focused (click the timer area once if shortcuts aren't responding).
| Shortcut | Tool | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Stopwatch, Countdown | Start / Pause toggle |
| R | Stopwatch, Countdown | Reset to zero / configured time |
| L | Stopwatch | Record lap time |
| F | Any timer | Toggle fullscreen mode |
| Esc | Fullscreen mode | Exit fullscreen (timer keeps running) |
| 1 – 5 | Countdown Timer | Apply preset duration (1 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min) |
Account Help
Creating an Account
An account is entirely optional - all timer tools work without one. To create a free account, click Sign Up in the navigation bar. Enter your email address and choose a password. You will receive a verification email; click the link inside to activate your account. Once verified, you can log in from any device.
Resetting Your Password
If you have forgotten your password, go to Forgot Password, enter the email address associated with your account, and submit. A reset link will be emailed to you within a few minutes. The link expires after 1 hour for security. If you don't receive the email, check your spam folder and verify you used the correct email address.
Saving Favorite Tools
When logged in, any tool page shows a Save to Favorites button (bookmark icon). Click it to add the tool to your favorites list, accessible from your dashboard. Your favorites are synced across all devices where you are logged in. You can reorder favorites by dragging them in the dashboard favorites section.
Dashboard Overview
Your dashboard shows your saved favorite tools, recent activity (Pomodoro sessions, timer history if enabled), and account settings. From the dashboard you can manage notifications, set your default timer sounds, and configure preferences like 12/24-hour clock format and default countdown duration.
Email Preferences
We send minimal email - account confirmation, password reset, and (optional) product updates. To manage email preferences, go to Account Settings and scroll to the Email section. You can disable all non-essential email while keeping security emails active.
Timer Tools FAQ
Does the timer work offline?
Yes - once a timer page has loaded, all timing logic runs in your browser with no internet connection required. The page must be loaded while online initially, but after that, you can disconnect your network and the timer will continue to function correctly. If you close and reopen the tab while offline, you will need a connection to reload the page.
Why is my timer not making sound? (Browser autoplay policy)
Modern browsers restrict audio playback until a user has interacted with the page. This means: click or tap somewhere on the timer page before starting the countdown to ensure the browser permits audio. If sound still doesn't play, check that (1) your device is not muted or in silent mode, (2) your browser's site permissions allow audio for stopwatch.now, and (3) your system volume is above zero. Use the "Test Sound" button on any timer to verify audio is working before you need it.
Can I use these tools on an iPad or iPhone?
Yes. All tools are tested on iOS Safari, Chrome for iOS, and major Android browsers. The interface adapts to touch input and screen size automatically. One iOS-specific note: to keep audio reliable on iPhone, keep the timer tab active (don't switch to another app mid-countdown) and make sure your iPhone is not in silent mode using the physical side switch.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. JavaScript continues running in background browser tabs on desktop browsers, so the timer keeps counting even when you switch to another tab. The alarm will still sound when time reaches zero. On mobile browsers, particularly Safari on iOS, background tabs may be suspended by the operating system after a period of inactivity - for critical timing on mobile, keep the timer tab visible on screen.
How accurate are the timers?
Stopwatch.now timers use requestAnimationFrame and the performance.now() high-resolution timing API, providing millisecond-level accuracy. Under normal browser conditions, timing drift is less than 10 milliseconds per minute - negligible for all practical applications. For certified sporting event timing, use hardware-certified timing equipment. Browser-based timers are suitable for training, cooking, classrooms, workouts, and presentations.
Can I embed a timer on my website?
Not directly via embed at this time. You can link to any timer page with a direct URL and it will open in the user's browser. For teachers who want to share a timer link with students, post the URL in your LMS (Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.) and students can open it independently. If you are interested in a commercial embedding solution for a specific use case, contact us.
Do these timers work on Android?
Yes. All tools are tested on Android Chrome and Firefox for Android. Performance is equivalent to desktop on modern Android devices. For very old devices with limited RAM, close other browser tabs and apps to ensure the timer tab gets sufficient resources to run without interruption.
Can I use multiple timers at once?
Yes. Open a new browser tab for each timer you want to run simultaneously. Each tab operates independently - starting, pausing, or resetting one timer has no effect on timers in other tabs. This is the recommended approach for multi-dish cooking, multi-station classroom setups, or any situation requiring parallel timing. Most modern computers handle 4–10 simultaneous timer tabs without performance issues.
Is my data private?
Yes. Timers run entirely in your browser - no data about your timing sessions is sent to our servers unless you are logged in and have explicitly enabled session saving. For anonymous users (no account), we store nothing about how you use the tools. For logged-in users, we store only what is necessary to provide the features you have enabled. We do not sell data to third parties. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
Why does sound not play until I click something?
This is a browser security policy called "autoplay restriction," introduced to prevent websites from playing unwanted audio when a page loads. Browsers require at least one user interaction (a click, tap, or keypress) on the page before audio is permitted. To ensure sound works: click anywhere on the timer page after it loads, then start your countdown. If you use the "Test Sound" button first, that counts as your interaction and audio will work correctly for the duration of that page session.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Timer paused or stopped unexpectedly | Browser tab was suspended (mobile) or browser crashed | Refresh the page; keep the timer tab in the foreground on mobile devices |
| No sound playing | Browser autoplay restriction; device muted; volume zero | Click the page first, check device volume, verify browser audio permissions for this site |
| Fullscreen button not working | Browser or site setting blocking fullscreen API | Click the padlock icon in the URL bar → Permissions → Allow fullscreen for this site |
| Page not loading or loading slowly | Network issue; browser cache problem | Hard refresh: Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) |
| Keyboard shortcuts not responding | Page focus is on a different element (e.g., an input field) | Click on the timer display area (not a button or field) to return focus to the page |
| Timer counts incorrectly after computer sleep | JavaScript paused during system sleep; timer resumed with clock correction | Timer automatically syncs to wall-clock time after wake - the displayed time should be accurate; if not, refresh and restart |
