Chess Time Controls
Time controls change the character of a game. Bullet rewards speed and pattern recognition, blitz balances calculation with pace, rapid gives beginners more room to think, and classical chess is best for slow analysis.
| Format | Common Setting | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Bullet | 1 to 3 minutes | Fast online games and quick tactical practice |
| Blitz | 5 minutes | Club games, casual matches, and fast strategy |
| Rapid | 10 to 15 minutes | Beginners, training games, and thoughtful play |
| Classical | 30 minutes or more | Serious practice and long over-the-board games |
How Chess Clock Notation Works
Chess time controls are usually written as X+Y. The first number is the starting minutes per player, and the second number is the increment in seconds added after each move. For example, 5+3 means each player starts with 5 minutes and receives 3 seconds after every move.
This clock currently runs straight countdown time controls. For games that normally use increment, choose a slightly longer base time or use the closest preset.
Other Uses for a Two-Player Clock
The same structure works well anywhere two sides alternate turns. Use it for Go, Scrabble, checkers, debate practice, negotiation drills, or structured meeting discussions where both people need equal speaking time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a chess clock work?
Each player has their own countdown. When one player finishes a move, they tap their side of the clock. Their clock stops and the opponent's clock starts.
What happens if a player runs out of time?
The player whose clock reaches zero loses on time. In casual games, players can agree on their own house rules, but the timer clearly shows when time has expired.
Can I set a custom time for each player?
Yes. Enter the number of minutes in the custom field and press Apply. Both players will receive that amount of time.
Does this chess clock support increment?
Not yet. This version supports straight countdown time controls. If you normally play with increment, choose a slightly longer base time.
Can I use it on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The layout is touch-friendly. On wider screens Player 2's side is rotated for face-to-face play; on smaller screens both panels stay upright for easier tapping.
