Pair Generator Guide

Use the pair generator when everyone needs a partner. It is especially useful for think-pair-share, practice drills, interviews, and peer review.

Pair Generator - Tips & Best Practices

  • Set groups to half the number of people for clean pairs.
  • If there is an odd number, make one group of three.
  • Use a timer to rotate pairs.

Creating Random Pairs Quickly

The pair generator creates random two-person pairings from a list in a single step. It is designed for think-pair-share activities, peer review sessions, practice drills, partner reading, and any collaborative task where every person needs exactly one partner. If the list has an odd number, one group of three is created automatically. Regenerate before each new session to rotate pairings and ensure students work with different partners over time.

Pair Generator Use Cases

  • Think-pair-share: pair students for discussion after a prompt before reporting to the class.
  • Peer review: assign random reviewers to avoid friends always reviewing each other.
  • Language partner drills: rotate conversation partners each session.
  • Sports warm-up: pair players for partner stretches or passing drills.
  • Interview practice: pair participants for mock interview and role-swap.

Timing Paired Activities

Pair the generator with the interval timer to automatically rotate partners after a fixed time. Set the interval to match your activity duration — 2 minutes for quick discussions, 5–10 minutes for peer review or longer drills. Use the stopwatch if pairs need to self-time an open-ended task.
