Custom Timer - Build Your Own

Build a multi-phase timer with your own labels, durations, and sounds. Perfect for complex routines, presentations, cooking sequences, and more.

Build Your Sequence

Add phases for warmups, work blocks, breaks, cooking steps, or presentations. Each phase can have its own name, duration, and alert sound.

Start runs every phase in order. The active phase is highlighted while the timer is running.

Why Custom Timers?

Most timer apps offer a single countdown from a preset duration. That works for simple tasks, but many real-world routines involve multiple phases with different durations, different alert sounds, and different labels. A yoga session might include a 5-minute warm-up, a 20-minute practice, and a 10-minute cool-down. A presentation might need a 3-minute intro, a 12-minute main talk, and a 5-minute Q&A - for presentation-specific timing tools, see our presentation timers. A custom multi-phase timer sequences all of these automatically, transitions between phases with an audio cue, and displays the name of the current phase - no manual intervention required.

The custom timer on this page lets you add as many phases as you need, name each one, set its duration, and choose an alert sound for the end of each phase. Once you click Start, the timer moves through your sequence autonomously. This transforms a complex multi-step routine into a single, effortless workflow.

How Multi-Phase Timers Work

Phase Sequencing

When you add multiple phases, they are queued in order. The timer runs Phase 1 to completion, plays the Phase 1 end sound, then immediately starts Phase 2 - and so on until all phases are complete. The phase label (the text you enter for each phase) is displayed prominently during that phase's countdown so you always know where you are in your routine.

Choosing the Right Sound for Each Phase

Sound selection is more important than it might seem. Use a gentle chime for phase transitions where you want to stay in a calm state (meditation, yoga). Use a beep for transitions that require your active attention (moving between workstation tasks). Use silence for phases you do not want interrupted by sound at all (sleeping, library use). The bell option sits in between - clear but not harsh. For workout-specific timing, our workout timers are pre-configured for common training formats.

Building a Pomodoro Sequence

A classic Pomodoro session has four 25-minute work blocks, each separated by a 5-minute break, and a longer 15-minute break after the fourth block. Build this in the custom timer by creating 8 phases: Work (25 min, Chime), Break (5 min, Bell), Work (25 min, Chime), Break (5 min, Bell), Work (25 min, Chime), Break (5 min, Bell), Work (25 min, Chime), Long Break (15 min, Bell). The timer sequences through all 8 phases automatically, telling you exactly which phase you are in. If you prefer a ready-built version, our Pomodoro timer handles this sequence for you automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many phases can I add? There is no hard limit - you can add as many phases as your routine requires. For very long sequences (10+ phases), scroll down to see all phase entries. Each phase has its own label, duration, and sound settings.
Can I reorder the phases? Currently, phases run in the order they are created. To reorder, remove the phases and re-add them in the desired sequence. Future updates will include drag-to-reorder functionality.
Does the custom timer work in fullscreen? Yes. Click the Full button to enter fullscreen mode. The current phase label and countdown are displayed in large, readable format - ideal for presenting to a room or using during a physical workout where you cannot be close to the screen.
Will the timer keep running if my screen locks? This depends on your device settings. On most desktop computers, browser JavaScript continues to run when the screen locks but the tab is still open. On mobile devices, iOS and some Android browsers may throttle JavaScript when the screen is off. For guaranteed accuracy on mobile, keep the screen on or use a native app. For simpler single-phase countdowns, our countdown timer is more lightweight and less likely to be throttled.
