Speech Timer Guide

A speech timer helps speakers rehearse pacing, stay inside a time limit, and leave space for introductions, transitions, and Q&A.

Speech Timer - Tips & Best Practices

  • Set the full speaking limit before rehearsing.
  • Practice once with notes and once without notes.
  • Use traffic-light timers when you need visual warning zones.

Rehearsing a Timed Speech

Set the speech timer to your exact time limit before rehearsing — not a rough estimate. Practising to a slightly longer time means you will overrun on the day when nerves speed up delivery. For a 10-minute speech, set the timer to 9 minutes 30 seconds to build in a natural pause buffer. Record the first rehearsal time, then adjust the script or delivery pace accordingly before the next run.

Speech Pacing Guidelines

  • Conversational pace: 120–140 words per minute for clear, relaxed delivery.
  • Technical or formal speech: 100–120 words per minute to allow time for comprehension.
  • Keynote delivery: 150–160 words per minute — energetic but still followable.
  • 5-minute speech at 130 wpm: approximately 650 words in the final script.
  • Always cut content rather than speaking faster when you are over time.

Using Traffic Light Mode for Live Delivery

For a live speech, the traffic light timer gives visual feedback without forcing the speaker to glance at a counter. Green means comfortable, yellow is a 2-minute warning, and red signals time is almost up. This is especially useful for panel sessions, competitive speaking, and classroom presentations where the audience can also see the display.
